Search for Sterile Neutrinos Mixing with Muon Neutrinos in MINOS.
We report results of a search for oscillations involving a light sterile neutrino over distances of 1.04 and 735 km in a ν_{μ}-dominated beam with a peak energy of 3 GeV. The data, from an exposure of 10.56×10^{20} protons on target, are analyzed using a phenomenological model with one sterile neutrino. We constrain the mixing parameters θ_{24} and Δm_{41}^{2} and set limits on parameters of th...
متن کاملIntroduction to Sterile Neutrinos
Model-building issues raised by the prospect of light sterile neutrinos are discussed in a pedagogical way. I first review the näıve proposal that sterile neutrinos be identified with “right handed neutrinos”. A critical discussion of the simple expedient of adding three gauge singlet fermions to the usual minimal standard model matter content is followed by an examination of right handed neutr...
متن کاملSterile neutrinos
Neutrino masses are usually described by adding to the Standard Model some SU(2)singlet fermions that have the Yukawa couplings, as well as some Majorana mass terms. The number of such fields and the scales of their Majorana masses are not known. Several independent observations point to the possibility that some of these singlets may have masses well below the electroweak scale. A sterile neut...
متن کاملHow to Find Sterile Neutrinos?
We describe an extention of the Standard Model (the νMSM) by three light singlet Majorana fermions – sterile neutrinos, which allows to address simultaneously the problem of neutrino oscillations and the problems of dark matter and baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We discuss the ways these new particles can be searched for in astrophysical, laboratory, and accelerator experiments.
